Oxford City Nomads went three points clear at the top of the Uhlsport Hellenic Premier Division with a comfortable 3-1 victory away to reigning champions Wantage on Saturday.

Nomads showed just why they are top of the table by dominating the first half.

Wantage could barely get out of their own half as the visitors’ quick feet and accurate passing kept them under pressure.

Had it not been for some strong defending and cracking saves from home keeper Gareth Tucker, the Nomads could have well gone in three or four goals to the good at half-time.

As it was, they had to settle for a 39th-minute strike from Jermaine Ferreira.

In the second half, Wantage started to get behind the Nomads defence and equalised in the 49th minute when a crisply struck pass from Gavin Jones found Richie Claydon, who netted from ten yards.

Wantage created several good scoring chances, but they were squandered.

Nomads regained the lead when Wantage defender Tom Rowe headed in to the top corner of own goal, giving keeper Gareth Tucker no chance.

As Wantage pushed upfield looking for the equaliser, the Nomads’ Zac McEachran broke clear and easily beat Tucker to seal victory.
