Ady Fuller hopes to mark his first season as Banbury United manager with a trophy after his side reached the Evo-Stik Southern League's Red Insure Cup final in midweek.

The Puritans beat Chesham United 5-4 in a thrilling penalty shoot-out following a goalless two hours in Tuesday’s league cup semi-final.

Their reward is a place in a two-legged final against Clevedon Town on Tuesday, March 27th and Tuesday, April 17. Banbury are away in the first leg.

“It would be great to win the cup, but my priority remains the league,” said Fuller, who won a United Counties League title when boss at Daventry.

“I don’t think we’re quite safe in the league yet, so we need two or three more wins,” added Fuller, whose side ent-ertain Premier Division promotion-chasing AFC Totton tomorrow.

Banbury have done well in cups this season, their exit from the Oxfordshire Senior Cup coming only after they used an ineligible player during their quarter-final win against Oxford City.

Their good cup form is in contrast to their league displays.

“We’re just not consistent enough to do well in the league, but you can get away with that in cups,” said Fuller.

Before the Totton game, Josh Blake and Liam Dolman will have fitness tests on leg injuries, but Danny Edmond will be out for a couple of weeks after spraining an ankle in the 2-1 defeat at Arlesey Town on Saturday.

A win for Banbury would boost Oxford City’s promotion prospects.

City entertain play-off rivals Chesham United tomorrow, on the back of a 2-0 midweek success against Barwell.

“That could prove to be the most important win of the season for us,” said City manager Mike Ford.

“Barwell are a really tough side to beat and never give up.

“We could not afford another defeat following the disappointing result at St Albans.”

Last Saturday, City frittered away a 2-0 lead against the Saints and lost 3-2.

“We gifted them a few goals,” said Ford.

“But to be fair, our defence was excellent against Barwell.”

In that game, Felipe Barcelos, who has been struggling of late, came off the bench to score the clinching second goal.

“I’m really pleased for the lad as he lost a bit of confidence,” said Ford, who could not confirm if the striker will start against Chesham.

“It depends how he gets on in training,” the manager added.

Left-sided player Kynan Isaac, who has been playing well for Oxford City Nomads, is added to Ford’s squad.
