The majority of last Sunday’s matches bec-ame victims of the freezing overnight temperatures, but Tackley Est-ates AC managed to fish.

They staged their Villagers Cup on the lower links stretch of the Cherwell, where seven hardy souls turned out.

As expected, chub were about the only fish caught, but they were all good ones.

Kim Wray tempted a specimen of 5.3.0 on legered bread to take the honours, while just a few drams separated second and third.

Geoff Broome had a chub of 4.15.0 for second, pipping Anthony Alder’s chub of 4.14.8.

Chub also dominated in the third leg of Sutton Courtenay’s Markertow Shield on the Appleford reach of the Thames.

The river was very low with little flow or colour and of the nine anglers taking part, only two weighed in.

Gary Stafford caught a 4.1.0 chub on breadpaste for top spot, and Ian Higgins had another of 3.6.0, also on bread.

Oxford Waltonians staged an Open on the Thame at Wheatley where parts of the river were frozen and glycerin was needed to keep the rod rings and pole elastic from freezing.

Tony Gee (Acorn Angling) won with 8.15.0, comprising two chub 4.10.0 and 4.5.0 on the pole with lobworm and caster to 14 hook and 3lb line.

Jeff Kidd caught two chub on the pole with maggot for 6.1.0, and Laurence Hook (College Oak) was third with a chub of 3.1.0.

More freezing overnight temperatures kept weight low at Oakfield Fishery.

Seven anglers fished Swallow Lake on Wednesday and the aerators had to be run to keep a section ice-free.

This affected the fishing badly, with just those few anglers who were able to reach the edge of the ice pack being successful.

John Brewster caught seven plump skimmers and around 50 small roach to win.

Result: 1 J Brewster (GOT Baits Oakfield) 9.4.0, 2 M McCallum (GOT Baits Oakfield) 1.0.0, 3 B Walker (GOT Baits Oakfield) 0.5.8.

On Saturday, some strategic ice cutting on Swallow and Woodpecker Lakes proved in vain as what pegs were ice-free at the start of the match soon iced over when the aerators were switched off.

Most of the ten anglers were reduced to fishing just a couple of metres out, but Martin Amos snared a couple of early skimmers while he could get to the edge of the ice pack at 13m.

Result: 1 M Amos (Sensas Angling Direct) 1.13.8, 2 S Carter (GOT Baits Oakfield) 0.3.0.

l Marston AC hold their AGM on Monday at the Victoria Arms, Marston (8pm).
