Oli Johnson doesn’t mind how he scores goals – but netting with a header is particularly pleasing.

The winger made his first start for Oxford United in Tuesday’s win over Dagenham and marked it with the opening goal in a 2-1 victory.

And the former Norwich man says that it was a big moment for him.

“When I saw Liam (Davis) was one-on-one with the full-back, I knew he had the ability to go past him so I just had to get in the box and try and get across the defender to the near post,” Johnson said.

“You’ve got to gamble as a forward player and it was a good cross and I don’t score too many with my head.

“But I’ll take any goal, especially in front of the home fans.

“Overall I was a little bit disappointed with my performance.

“There is a lot more to come, but I don’t like to be too hard on myself as I haven’t had much match time lately.”

Johnson said he was looking forward to a good few days training ahead of Saturday’s match at Bristol Rovers.

Although he has only been at the club around three weeks, he was one of the more experienced United players on the pitch in the second half with four people making their debuts.

“I guess I was,” he laughed. “I never really thought of that.

“The team will start to gel and get to know each other and I don’t think that’s a worry because the performances will come.

“I think we lacked a bit of cohesion, but we’re getting to know each other more and more in training.

“It’s good to have a bit of normality back and routine.

“We have got a lot of games coming up, but it’s nice to be back training on grass and it’s a big two or three weeks ahead for us.

“A draw would have been such a disappointing result so we picked ourselves up and went for it and I hope that will be a result that can kick-start things for us.”
