Former Sunderland striker Matt Fletcher is set to make his first appearance for Oxford United when they travel to North Leigh in the Oxfordshire Senior Cup quarter-final tonight.

Fletcher, 19, who has represented Australia at under-20 level, and is on trial at the Kassam Stadium, will be part of a strong United line-up which includes Paul McLaren, Harry Worley, Anthony Tonkin, Asa Hall and Steve Kinniburgh.

North Leigh manager Mark Gee says his Evo-Stik Southern League underdogs will adopt a more cautious approach than they did the last time the sides met.

That was last season when the U’s recorded a 9-3 win at the same stage of the competition.

“We had a real go at them last time and there was still a six-goal differential,” said Gee, who will give Andy Caton (groin) a late fitness test.

“We can’t be as gung-ho this time. It was like a basketball game. It was entertaining for the spectators, but I think we were a bit naive.

“Playing Oxford is always tough because they have a big squad and they are going to be really competitive.”

He added: “When you are a player you want to draw Oxford in the Senior Cup, but when you are a manager you want to play Hook Norton.”

Oxford City could give a debut to Zac McEachran when they host Barwell in the Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division – a game rearranged after Saturday’s match was postponed because of a frozen pitch.

Boss Mike Ford is short of strikers with Felipe Barcelos suspended, Steve Basham struggling with an Achilles tendon, Aaron Woodley sidelined with an ankle injury and winger Michael Lyon, who can play up front, also banned.

He said: “Zac is going to be involved, but whether he starts will depend in whether I can sign another striker in time.”

Banbury United face a tough trip to AFC Totton where they aim to end a winless run of five games.
