Oxford University scrum half Sam Egerton was a surprise late inclusion in the London Welsh squad who drew 24-24 with Leinster A in the British & Irish Cup.

Egerton, who turns 20 next week, came off the bench after 72 minutes to help the Exiles secure a draw on Sunday, having been approached by the Championship club just three days before.

Egerton, who impressed the London Welsh coaches with his Varsity Match display, had been due to run out for his hometown club Newport in National 3 Midlands, but jumped at the chase to play at professional level.

Meanwhile, two Oxfordshire figures played a key role in the appointment of new RFU chief executive Ian Ritchie.

Oxford University’s representative to the union, Stephen Pearson, and acting RFU chairman Paul Murphy, of Abingdon RFC, oversaw the interview process alongside independent directors Miles Templeman and Andrew Higginson.

Murphy will take over as RFU president for the 2012-13 season.
