Abingdon United scored their first goal for more than 400 minutes as they came from behind to overturn the formbook in their Evo-Stik Southern League Division 1 South & West game with a 2-1 win at Cinderford. The high-riding hosts seemed set for an easy win when they took an interval lead, but second-half goals from Sam Collier and Stuart Young enabled Abingdon to pull away from the drop zone.

Cinderford found visiting keeper James Foster in superb form in the first half as he denied John Egan and Neil McCootie with super saves.

However, he was beaten on the half-hour, after Michael Buck tugged at Dean Lee just outside the box and then tripped him as he entered the penalty area.

Home captain Dale Evans blasted home the resultant spot-kick.

Abingdon equalised just after half-time when Collier slipped the ball past advancing keeper Ben John, from Carl Evans’s pass.

Foster again saved brilliantly from Lee, McCootie and Evans, the last one being an acrobatic effort.

Back came Abingdon as Collier saw his shot deflected over.

With 12 minutes left, substitute Sam Baker raced down down the right and curled in a cross.

Collier touched it on and after a mistake in the home defence, Young was on it in a flash to touch it past them and then ran on to tap the ball over the line for the winner.

Egan smashed in an accurate attempt and was denied by the legs of Foster and Cinderford’s last chance had gone.
