The Oxford Winter League has moved from the Thames to the Oxford Canal and 40 anglers fished Sunday’s practice match from Wolvercote through to Aristotle Lane ahead of tomorrow’s fourth round.

The canal was quite clear with unusually few boats and there were plenty of small fish caught, although you needed bonus fish to make the frame.

Winner Paul Passmore (Turners) was pegged two below the railway bridge at Wolvercote. He caught seven skimmers and a handsome 1.10.0 roach on punched bread, plus a few perch on worm, for 8.12.0.

There was a tie for second between Drennan GOT Baits teammates Tony Hobbs and Gary Barclay, who were only two ounces behind with 8.10.0.

Tony fished the end peg just above Aristotle Lane bridge and caught a mixture of skimmers and roach on punch and some perch on chop.

Gary drew a noted perch peg on Frenchay Road and had 5lb of them on chop, plus skimmers on punch.

Stuart Harrop (Turners) and John Beesley (Drennan GOT Baits) were fourth and fifth with 7.7.0 and 5.12.0 respectively.

Coldstone were also on the canal at Upper Heyford, where Pete Upton topped the eight-strong field with 6.8.0 of roach, perch, dace and gudgeon.

Garry Didcock was runner-up with three good perch on pole and worm, plus some bits on pinkie, for 4.9.0, while Steve Arthurs was third with 3.1.0, again roach, perch and gudgeon on squat and pinkie on the pole.

The first round of the Paul Woodley Winter League was fished by 18 at Ridgeways, Barford St Michael, which was on song.

Paul Hayes took top spot with 14 carp for 50.4.0, followed by David Wilsdon with five carp for 34.12.0 and Paul Pickett with 29.8.0 of carp and roach.

Pete Clarke is becoming a venue expert at Sandford, and he again showed his class to win the Littlemore AS Secretary’s Cup on the Thames where the 13 anglers weighed in 23.10.0.

The winner was fishless after the first hour on the pole, so he switched to waggler with maggot and caught a good net of chublets for 9.4.0.

Ken Franklin used the same tactics for another net of small chub worth 6.4.0, followed by Brian Hutchings, who had a bonus perch on the waggler, plus a few smaller perch on the pole, for 3.2.0. He also claimed the cup, defeating Vernon Adams.

Sixteen anglers fished the Kidlington AS open on the Cherwell at Thrupp and two big chub were enough to give Jim Martin victory.

He tempted them on maggot-feeder to triumph with 8.12.0.

Second was Henry Clarke with 7.11.0 of perch (best 2lb) and roach on worm and chopped worm feeder.

A bream of 5.6.0, plus a few bits, on pole with worm or caster gave Jeff Chandler third place with 6.2.0.

Other result Sutton Courtenay AC: (Howard Rice Trophy, Thames, Appleford Reach, 14 fished) 1 M Granito 10.12.0, 2 G. Stafford 2.15.0, 3 M Sear 2.12.0.
