OXFORD City chairman Brian Cox has challenged his Southern League table-toppers to go and make history tomorrow – by reaching the FA Cup second round for the first time.

Two seasons ago, the Court Place Farm outfit made the same stage, only to bow out after a 3-2 defeat at npower League Two side Burton Albion, and Cox (pictured) wants them to go a step further by beating Ryman League Division 1 North side Redbridge.

“We are top of the league, which in fantastic, but there is still nothing like the FA Cup to create a bit of interest,” said Cox, who has been chairman for nearly ten years.

“Everyone is very excited at the club to get through to the first-round proper again.”

Although the east London outfit are the lowest-placed side in the competition, Cox said no one at City, who took over at the top of the Premier Division for the first time in their 129-year history with a 4-1 win at Arlesey Town on Tuesday, was getting carried away.

Cox, whose side can take their Cup earnings to £42,000 with a win added: “On paper, we can win it (the game), but everyone knows it’s not as simple as that. We are going really well at the moment, but who knows what will happen in the FA Cup.

“It’s not the easiest place to go, we are keeping our fingers crossed. But the way we are going now, we have got every chance.

“There is a real buzz around the place (at City). We are a club on the up and it’s great when something like that happens – so you make the most of it.

“The way we are playing, we don’t fear anyone and we know we have a good squad.”

The Motormen, who are managed by Terry Spillane, and reached the first round with a shock 2-0 win against Ebbsfleet, boast Jimmy Greaves’s grandson and Tony Adams’s nephew in their ranks.

James Robinson, 25, is following in the footsteps of Tottenham and England legend “Greavsie” as a striker, while keeper Adam Rafis, 27, like his uncle Tony, likes a clean sheet.

l THERE are still a number of coach spaces available for the trip to Redbridge.
