Chipping Norton’s Fergus Walkinshaw had mixed fortunes in the final rounds of the Michelin Ginetta GT Supercup at Silverstone.

Driving for the Century Motorsport team, the 20-year-old Oxford Brookes University student charged through the field in Saturday’s race to make up ten places for eighth in class and ninth overall as Adam Morgan claimed the title.

But in Sunday’s race he received a drive through penalty for exceeding the track limits while in 11th on lap 17.

A mistake in interpreting the pit board communication meant that Walkinshaw did not take the penalty within the permitted three laps and was consequently excluded from the race results.

He said: “I really enjoyed Saturday’s round 26 and picking my way through the pack to finish eighth in class, but I’m naturally disappointed at the outcome of Sunday’s race as I was hopeful of delivering another strong finish.

“I saw the black and white flag, but I didn’t see the car numbers behind the yellow ‘exceeding track limits’ board, so it’s a real shame to finish the season that way.

And he added: “I’ve only contested a few rounds this season after I finished building my Ginetta G55 in August, but it’s been great to return to racing and every round has been a valuable experience. I now look forward to completing a full season next year.”

ALICE Powell’s hopes of finishing the Formula Renault UK Championship at Silverstone on a high note were dashed.

Driving for the Manor Competition team, the 18-year-old Chipping Norton racer went into the final two rounds in seventh spot.

But she slipped down to ninth in the standings following 11th and tenth place finishes.

Victory in race one went to Alex Lynn, which saw him claim the championship.

Powell was hit by a drive through penalty in the second race after she exceeded the track limits.

Powell and Lynn were both penalized while racing for ninth place in the race won by Oliver Rowland.
