Terry Biddlecombe continues to make progress after he suffered a stroke at his West Lockinge home, near Wantage, on Saturday.
The three-times champion jumps jockey, 70, is undergoing treatment at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford.
His wife, trainer Henrietta Knight, said on Wednesday: “He is resigned to his week in hospital and talking a little better.”
Meanwhile, Josh Gifford, Biddlecombe’s old adversary and friend in the saddle, is “critical, but stable” in hospital in Worthing with septicemia.
