Oxford University will hope to have turned a corner after securing their first victory of the season.

Wing Cassian Bramham-Law scored 28 points as the Dark Blues defeated a Richmond XV 45-29 on Monday.

And having lost their opening three matches, this was a far better display, with Richmond, who are coached by former Varsity supremo Steve Hill, grabbing three late tries to reduce the arrears.

Oxford rested captain John Carter, who ran his eye over over a much-changed side.

Bramham-Law opened the scoring with a penalty, but Richmond hit back witth a try from right wing Jack Bird.

A second Bramham-Law penalty made it 6-5 before flanker AJ Connor drove over.

Bramham-Law converted this and a third penalty before scoring his first try, set up by fly half Tom Mitchell.

After the break, Richmond’s former Oxford Blue flanker Doug Abbott barrelled over, fly half Scott Browne converting.

Three tries in 15 minutes underlined Oxford’s potential – the first from Bramham-Law, who added a conversion and his fourth penalty.

Mitchell burst through a hole to score in the corner, Bramham-Law converting.

Centre Baz Perkins scored under the posts for replacement fly half Matt Janney to convert.

Richmond ran in late tries from Browne (2) and Richard Welding, Browne converting one.

The Dark Blues can expect a far tougher test when they host Wasps on Monday.

l AUSTRALIAN tourists Queensland University completed a Varsity double by defeating Cambridge University 22-19 at Grange Road on Saturday.

A penalty from former Oxford Harlequins full back Will Tuffley ultimately proved decisive, although Cambridge battled back from 22-12 down.

Queensland beat Oxford 25-8 last week, so maybe the Light Blues have gained an early edge ahead of their Twickenham showdown on December 8.
