Didcot Town manager Dave Mudge has saluted the contribution of right back Sam Elkins after he made a superb debut in Saturday’s 3-1 FA Trophy win against Clevedon.

Elkins, 21, the former Abingdon United player, signed for Town on Thursday night hours after completing a 40-week prison sentence for a public order offence and criminal damage.

Mudge said Elkins (pictured below) starred in Didcot’s first home win since April.

“He has showed a fantastic attitude in the days he has been with us,” said Mudge.

“Considering he hasn’t played for a long time he did ever so well and embraced what we want to do here.

“I thought he was man of the match.

“I’m not interested in what he did before, I’m only interested in what he does on the pitch.

“And if he can come to training each week on time, then he’s going to be a great si-gning for us.”

Mudge also praised the contribution of fellow new signings Victor Asombang, from Chertsey, and Steve Davis.

He added: “They did well. Victor got a goal and Steve got two. We had been looking for someone on the left side and Steve fulfilled that role.

“It’s only one game, one win and we’re can’t get carried away.

“There is still a lot of hard work to do on the fitness side.

“When I came here performances and fitness levels were not good enough. They’re going to be doing another pre-season, so make of that what you will.”

Defender Alex Stanley has been appointed as Didcot’s new captain.

Stanley has been given the armband following the departure of Jamie Heapy.

Mudge added: “He has done all I have asked him and he has led us on the pitch, so he was the ideal candidate.”

Meanwhile, Mudge has signed striker Lewis Noble and defender Jack Bernasconi on Southern League forms after some decent displays for the youth and reserve teams.
