Abingdon United bowed out of the FA Trophy, but only after a cracking preliminary round tie which they lost 4-3 at Chalfont St Peter. The visitors took the lead after 15 minutes, when Carl Evans bundled the ball in after a cross from Aaron Parfitt’s cross had been headed against the bar.
Chalfont St Peter, from the Evo-Stik Southern League Central Division, equalised from their first raid on goal when Charlie Strutton’s hooked shot took a deflection which wrong-footed Abingdon keeper James Foster and bobbled into the net off a post.
Abingdon then conceded two goals in a minute just before the break.
John Carroll looped a header over Foster to make it 2-1.
Before Abingdon could compose themselves Strutton smashed the ball home on the turn from 15 yards for 3-1.
Abingdon were back in the game 30 seconds after the interval when Sam Collier drilled a shot past Chalfont keeper Mark Oliver.
After a good spell, the visitors deservedly equalised when awarded a penalty for a foul on Collier, which he coolly converted.
The tie was settled six minutes from time when Chalfont’s Terrell Evans curled a tremendous shot over Foster into the top corner of the net, to leave Abingdon deflated.
