Former Oxford United men Steve Basham and Lee Steele led Oxford City on a seven-goal spree on Saturday.

Basham, with four first-half goals, and substitute Steele, who hammered a second-half hat-trick, scored all the goals as Mike Ford’s side routed Swindon Supermarine 7-1 to return to second spot in the Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division table.

City were in front as soon as the second minute.

Felipe Barcelos’s centre from the right carried to the far side, from where Marvin Martin set up Basham to head home.

Supermarine were reduced to ten men after eight minutes when Gary Horgan was sent off for a rash challenge on Martin.

Despite this, the visitors’ had a chance when Dave Bampton found Sean Wood, but his header lacked power.

At the other end, Swindon keeper Kent Kauppinen saved well from Darren Pond and Adam Learoyd in quick succession.

But three goals in six minutes from Basham decided the contest.

Basham got his second in the 36th minute when he drove past Kauppinen.

Three minutes later he completed his his hat-trick following good work by James Clarke and Declan Benjamin.

The striker made it 4-0 at the break when touching in a pass from Pond following Barcelos’s corner Supermarine reduced the arrears in the 50th minute when Bradley Gray scored direct from a free-kick.

Steele, who had come on for Basham at half-time, was not to be left out of the act, as he avoided several challenges to score No 5.

Fifteen minutes from time, casual marking by the Swindon defence allowed Steele to score his second.

He collected his hat-trick and City’s seventh when heading home in the 83rd minute Steele nearly emulated his colleague Basham, but his attempt for his fourth goal was disallowed for an infringement.
