JAMES Constable could not hide his delight at rediscovering his goal-scoring touch after his double helped Oxford United sink Bristol Rovers on Saturday.

In front of a bumper crowd of 9,291, the U’s leading scorer grabbed a goal in each half as they recorded an impressive 3-0 victory at the Kassam Stadium on Saturday.

Peter Leven scored the other goal from the penalty spot as United left the pitch to a standing ovation after a throughly-professional display.

The victory keeps them three points off top spot in npower League Two, and saw Chris Wilder’s side collect their fifth win in six matches.

And for Constable, who had not scored since August 27, the goals were the icing on the cake.

“It has been a quiet month for me with not being able to get on the scoresheet,” he said.

“Although the other lads have done the business and scored goals, as a striker you want to be getting them yourself so I’m delighted with today.

“It was a big game and important we got back to winning at home.

“The first goal came sweetly off my left foot which and with the second one I knew I had scuffed it, but thankfully it crept in.”

And it capped a hectic week for the striker.

“It was my birthday Tuesday, my little brother and his fiancee gave birth to their first child at the weekend and my older brother got engaged,” he said.

“It’s been a busy week and I was delighted to round it off with a couple of goals.

“The important thing is that we pick up the three points, but from a personal point of view I’m delighted to have scored again.”

Boss Chris Wilder praised his side’s performance “It was a fantastic result and great effort from everybody,” he said. “Beano (Constable) will quite rightly get the headlines after his goals which is right, but I thought there was a lot of big performances out there.”
