Headington A completed the double for the second successive year by capturing the Oxford & District League Cup.

Having already been crowned league champions, Headington ran out 67-55 winners over Oxford City & County in the final of the cup competition, sponsored by S&J Timms Cleaning Services and Frances Baker, of Rub A Dub Dub Laundrette, under the floodlights at Hanborough.

There were only two shots between the two sides at 12 ends, with closely-fought encounters on the four rinks.

But as darkness descended, Headington captain Nick Rae-Welsh led his rink to a 26-12 victory against City & County skip Alan Ley – and that proved decisive.

City & County won on two of the three other rinks, with Chris Earl defeating Nathan Lewis 16-10, while Paul Comley squeezed past Mark Charlett 14-13.

Headington’s other rink win was provided by Craig Nicoll’s side, who beat skip Mike Petersen 18-13.

A delighted Rae-Welsh, who is taking a break from playing next year, said: “To collect the league and cup double for the second year running is a great finish to the season and a ‘swansong’ for me personally.

“We’ve had huge success this year at county level and, although we suffered the disappointment of not making the national finals of the Top Club, to claim the league, cup and Hawker Cup titles as a club shows the team spirit here.

“I’d also like to congratulate City & County A on a great final. They beat us at our place in the league back in July and managed to win on two of the four rinks today, so we knew it was always going to be a tough game.”
