Oxfordshire's Colin Whitehead experienced contrasting emotions at the Bowls England National Singles Championship at Worthing.
The Headington bowler blitzed Jim Wilson (Connaught, Essex) 21-1 in the first round.
But then he had the misfortune to run into David Bolt (Silksworth, Durham), who won 21-8 before going on to lift the title.
Banbury Central also perished at the hands of the eventual winners with a 33-25 defeat by Supreme (Surrey) in the quarter-finals of the inaugural Tony Allcock Trophy, the National Mixed Over 60 Double Rink competition.
Maureen Cox, Ann Norton, Ian Whelpton, John Tee, Pamela Shepherd, Mary Tee, John McGeough and Michael Andrew made up Central’s team.
