“WE didn’t play great – but nobody from Oxford will give a monkey’s about that, it was all about the result and we have beaten Swindon away for the first time in 38 years.”

Chris Wilder’s comments after yesterday’s famous derby win, will bring beaming smiles to the face of every United fan this morning.

James Constable’s first-half double gave Oxford a 2-1 victory over their fierce rivals – the first time in 38 years that they have won at the County Ground.

And while the performance was not their best, United’s players did what they had to and won the game.

An added bonus for U’s fans was seeing opposing manager Paolo Di Canio sent to the stands in the second half.

“It was all about the three points and making sure every Oxford fan went home with massive smiles on their face,” Wilder said.

“We didn’t play great today, but we have won the match and that was the important thing – nobody will give a monkey’s about the performance.

“I’ve been a fan at derby games before and when your team wins, the feeling as you leave the ground is second to none.

“I’m so pleased for the supporters because for 38 years they have had nothing to cheer here, but they have today and I am sure they will all go home and celebrate – I will.”

Constable was all the talk in the build-up to the game after Di Canio branded him a Swindon fan and claimed he would be interested in signing the striker.

And Wilder was delighted that his No 9 answered any criticism in the best-possible way.

“They were two great goals by the Swindon fan weren’t they,” Wilder joked.

“A lot of things were said in the build-up to the match, but we remained professional, kept our counsel and just let our football do the talking.

“I was disappointed with how we played, we are so much better than that, but the bottom line is the result.”
