It is an indication of how far Hannah England has progressed in the last 12 months that she described herself as disappointed with second place in the 1,500m at Aviva London Games at Crystal Palace on Saturday, writes Stuart Weir. The Oxford City athlete’s time of 4mins 5.38secs left her just behind Lisa Dobriskey, whom England had beaten last week in the UK trials.

England was in third place after the first lap, but lost ground and came to the bell in fifth, some ten metres off the pace.

She made a strong run for home on the last lap moving into second place, but was not quite able to catch Dobriskey.

“My plan was to stay in touch and go with the pace, but I felt a bit heavy-legged and frustrated,” said England. “I am pleased I did not let that panic me and to produce a really strong last 300.”
