TADMARTON Heath ladies finally ended their hoodoo by winning the Oxfordshire Captain’s Inter-Club Trophy.

A 2½-½ victory over Oxford Ladies in the final at Witney Lakes earned Tadmarton the spoils in the foursomes event, which was first played for in 1997 “It was lovely to go one better at last,” said team captain Jane Hackett.

“There were a number of years in the past when we kept being beaten by Chipping Norton in the final.

“It was a tremendous win and my thanks go out to all the ladies who have represented Tadmarton in the competition this year.”

Tadmarton defeated Burford 2-1 in their morning semi-final, while Oxford had seen off Chippy.

The final provided some close encounters, with Tadmarton’s Thelma Mawle and Gwen Phipps beating Maggie Edwards and Claire Fox on the 19th hole to clinch victory.

Hackett and Sue Fisher finished all square in their game with Oxford’s Jan Glover and Rosie Caunt.

That was in large part due to Fisher’s cool putting under pressure. Twice in the closing holes she sank eight-foot putts to keep the match alive.

In match three, which finished first, Tadmarton’s Margaret Moggridge and Muriel Williams proved too strong for Anne Clarke and Carol Whittle, taking the game on the 16th hole.

  • FRILFORD Heath will host junior county match days on their Red Course on Monday and Tuesday.

Girls from Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire will play singles matches.

There will also be a stableford foursomes team event, with Oxon the holders.
