Oxford UCCE batsman Ben Jeffery hit a brilliant 161 to steer Free Foresters out of trouble against Oxfordshire Development XI on day one of their two-game game at Radley College on Monday.

The visitors were 70-5 when Jeffery, who plays for Ashtead in the Surrey Championship Premier Division, came to the crease.

But his big ton, which came off 224 balls and included 21 fours and two sixes, turned the innings round and helped take Free Foresters to 338 all out.

Opener Connor Nurse hit 56, while skipper Richard West (3-66) and Faisal Khalid (3-69) were the chief wicket-takers in an Oxon attack depleted by the loss of Wasim Mehmood, who suffered a badly dislocated finger after landing awkwardly while diving in the field.
