Chris Wilder admits that everyone has been impressed with Alfie Potter’s stunning start to Oxford United’s pre-season.

Going into the U’s final game of their United States tour against Seacocast United in the early hours of this morning, the 22-year-old right winger had scored in every pre-season friendly.

A goal against Didcot has been followed by strikes against Seacoast United Phantoms and Mass United in America.

And his performances have caught the eye of his manager as well as U’s fans.

Wilder says that Potter’s ability to take on board constructive criticism is part of the reason why he has been on top of his game.

“Alfie’s hit the goal trail which we have said he needs to do to top up his all-round game,” said United’s manager.

“I thought his movement, as well as that of Deane Smalley’s, was first-class at the weekend.”

Worryingly for other npower League Two defences, United have yet to do work on finishing – and they have hit nine goals in three games so far.

“The shape of the team has been good, we moved the ball about well – the only things we haven’t done is take our chances,” Wilder said.

“It could have been double figures at the weekend.

“We just need to put the finishing touches to things, and we will be doing that over the next two weeks.

“We still have a lot of work to do, especially in and around the opposition’s penalty area, but we’ll get there – we haven’t worked on that yet.”

United are due to fly back tomorrow, before continuing their pre-season programme against MK Dons at the Kassam Stadium on Saturday.

Wilder’s team then entertain Birmingham next Tuesday, before tackling an Everton XI – again at the Kassam Stadium – on Friday, July 29.
