Oxford 2nd went from 108-3 to 110 all out as they crashed to a 107-run defeat at Great & Little Tew in an astonishing end to their Division 1 clash on Saturday.

The match looked to be heading for a draw after Oxford fought back from 47-3 to establish a relatively comfortable position.

But Joe White had Aaron Huish stumped off the final ball of the 24th over, and 15 balls later the match was over as Peter Fuller fell for 53 and the other six visiting batsmen failed to score a single run between them.

Tew skipper Andy Harris finished with figures of 6-29, while White took 3-4 from his three overs to add to the 6-39 he claimed against the same opponents in May.

Earlier, the hosts had made 217-8 after being asked to bat, with Ed Gross (47) and Robbie Shurmer (37) adding 67 for the third wicket, before Lloyd Brock (32) smashed four boundaries and a couple of sixes late on.

Tom Geeson-Brown (4-54) and Jon Allcock (3-53) were the pick of the visitors’ attack.

But their slow over rate saw them lose one point – and a few hours later they survived a total of only five balls as Oxford’s day turned into a disaster.

Tew’s victory gave them revenge for their ten-run defeat to Oxford when the sides met earlier this season and extended their good recent run, which has seem them climb from ninth in mid-June into the top half of the table.

Mark Strong took 5-29 and then struck some vital runs to lead his Oxford & Bletchingdon Nondescripts side towards a three-wicket win over Bourton Vale.

Heavy morning rain had put the match in doubt, but the players’ and umpires’ patience paid off when the game started 90 minutes late at 2.30pm.

Bottom club Vale won the toss and chose to bat in the knowledge that their innings would last 40 overs and their opponents would receive 34.

Harry Keeling’s aggressive 51 set the visitors on the way to a competitive 158-9, which would have been higher had Nondies’ skipper Strong not turned the screw in a miserly 12-over spell.

The hosts lost Tim Rattigan to the first ball of their reply and soon fell behind the required rate despite Shabaz Alam’s 52.

With 30 needed from the final 18 balls, Strong hit two fours and two sixes in the 32nd over before Jon Guthrie struck three boundaries from the next to hand Nondies victory with an over to spare.

There was also a delayed start in the clash between Shipton-under-Wychwood and Cumnor, which was reduced from 100 to 87 overs.

Put in to bat, Shipton managed 204-5 from 46 overs, with Paul Hemming making 73 and Ross Barrett 45. Miles Hammond (3-59) was the pick of the visitors’ attack.

Cumnor, therefore, needed to score at exactly five an over to clinch victory, but could barely manage four despite the best efforts of Matt Lake (36) and Jack Miell (34).

So skipper Sam Jones settled for a draw with his side on 161-3 and his personal tally 70 not out.

Cumnor’s result meant leaders Oxford Downs stretched their advantage at the top, despite failing to see off Bletchley Town.

Downs elected to bat and posted 194-5 thanks to Andrew Buckingham’s 88 not out and Will Watts’s 38.

Daryl Johnson then took 3-19 to put the hosts firmly in command, but Raj Lall’s 50 was just enough to help Town stave off defeat on 107-7.

Banbury 2nd put themselves back into the leading pack in Division 2 by collecting 19 points from their match at Sandford St Martin while their rivals were all rained off.

After waiting until 2pm for the match to start, Banbury made 212-6 from 44 overs.

Chris Smith (57) and Andrew Sabin (48) both made the most of being dropped early on, while Sandford’s frustration was deepened when they were docked one point for their slow over rate.

The home side were soon 2-2 and never recovered against Josh Megson (3-25) and Ollie Wright (4-36), but Alex Kill’s 58 and some late resistance left them clinging on for a draw at 123-9.

All the other Division 2 games were abandoned.

James Coleman took 5-72, but his Cropredy side still came up some way short of victory at home to Bledlow Ridge in Division 3.

Despite Coleman’s fine 18-over spell, Ridge were still able to make 227-8 from an innings reduced to 49 overs, with Simon Bird making 97 not out and Paul Brzezicki 45.

Wayne Hazel then hit 43 in Cropredy’s reply, which ended well short on 170-6 from 43 overs.

The other matches in the division were abandoned along with all matches in Divisions 4-9.

Great & Little Tew 4th beat Long Marston 3rd by seven wickets in the league’s only other match to survive the wet weather.

Marston chose to bat and managed 152-8 through veteran Geoff Graveson (52) and Sam Woodruff (38no).

Tew lost three wickets early in their reply, but recovered to win without further loss through Sam Barnes (58no) and Ben Millard (52no).
