THERE was disappointment for the three Oxfordshire boxers competing in the finals of the Amateur Boxing Association of England’s National Female Championships at Mansfield Leisure Centre.

Windrush Valley’s Jasmine Yeates, looking to add to the title gained 12 months ago, tasted disappointment in Nottinghamshire in her quest for a second successive victory over Natasha Cole.

She outpointed the same Ports-mouth opponent in 2010, but was unable to repeat that success in the Class 6 (born 1993) 71kg category.

Abingdon’s Lucy Cook, boxing in the finals for a second season in succession, also lost.

Last year she was outpointed by Terri Leigh Harper from Ernie Oxers ABC and she suffered the same outcome against Olivia Orchard from Newquay in the Class 3 (born 1996) 54kg class.

Berinsfield’s Niamh McGuckin had reached her first national final, where she faced Emma Dolan of Attleborough ABC in the Class 1 (born 1998) 40kg division.

The Oxfordshire girl proved more accurate in her delivery to hold the lead after the opening session, before her opponent had the edge in the closing stages.

And that proved just enough to have her arm raised in triumph after an absorbing battle.
