Oxford matchman Andy Benwell (Masons) is the new Garbolino Club Angler of the Year.

Benwell, who finished second in last year’s televised Fish O’Mania competition, saw off some of the country’s top anglers at Barston Lake in the West Midlands with a net of skimmers and F1 carp weighing 80.6.0.

He had to qualify from the Tunnel Barn heat, where he finished runner-up with 94.0.0.

Victory in the final earned him the top prize of £1,000, plus a top-of-the-range Garbolino pole and a trophy, and something that he has been on his wish list for some time – an invitation to compete in the prestigious Drennan Knock-out Cup.

Nineteen matchmen travelled to Tunnel Barn Farm for the latest match in the Carp League 2011 series. They were on the top pool.

Benwell (Predator) was again the clear winner, weighing in a net of F1’s worth 90.8.0. He fished paste right under his feet.

Derek Hammond also caught F1’s, plus barbel, on sweetcorn and meat fished short, for a second-placed 66.0.0.

He was followed by Gary Keetley, with F1’s, including a decent carp of around 10lb, for 65.8.0. He drew a corner peg.

Stable Lake fished its head off for the 12 anglers contesting the final match in the Anne Malone Memorial, despite torrential rain and strong winds.

It was the Malones who took the first three places.

Stephen triumphed with 110.5.0 of carp on method feeder with pellet. Frank Malone was second with 84.6.0, including a carp of 17.6.0, while Roger Malone had to settle for third with 80.10.0 on the pole and the method.

Around £1,000 was raised for Sobell House over the four-match series.

Beehive AC endured continuous rain at Lower Court Farm where Kevin Jeacock emerged the victor with 30.10.0, all carp from the margins to pole and maggot.

Richard Mott was second with 23.3.0 carp to straight lead and pellet, followed by Nigel Waters with 22.0.8 to pole and maggot. Fourteen fished.

Twelve anglers fished the North Oxford match on the Oxford Canal at Frenchay Road in miserable conditions.

You needed to be pegged by the bridge to stand any chance. Fish, like ducks, recognise bridges as places where they can get a free meal.

After five hours, Paul Jackman triumphed with 2.12.0 of small silver fish on red maggot over groundbait.

Mick Abbot weighed in 2.7.8, comprising a half-decent skimmer caught on punch, plus a few small roach, skimmers and gudgeon on pinkie for second place.

Terry Whittington and Ian Fisher tied for third with 2.6.0. Both caught small silver fish, Ian favouring punch and Terry using red maggot.
