Oxfordshire's Giles Waterson is celebrating a terrific series of results that have propelled him to among the best in the country for his age.

The youngster, who turns 15 this year and who plays at Abingdon’s Vale of White Horse Leisure and Tennis Centre, came top of the regional leaderboard for the whole of the south east.

This includes counties such as Middlesex, Surrey and Kent, with the region classed as one of the strongest in the country.

Waterson achieved this by playing in six regional tournaments throughout the winter indoor season.

He won all six, scoring the maximum points possible.

Thanks to his outstanding results, Waterson finished the winter season inside the top ten boys in England.

He now moves into the summer outdoor season and up into the 16s age group.

The right-hander has already had signs of some great results in this age group by coming through two rounds at a grade 2 national event in Nottingham, taking out the No 9 seed along the way.

This week, Waterson has been competing in Solihull in the national clay court event, and he was making good progress by coming through qualifying and winning rounds in the main draw.

His coach is Nick Elliott, and other coaches at the White Horse Leisure and Tennis Centre also work with him.

“At the White Horse we are over the moon with the steady but strong progress Giles is making,” said one of the coaching team, Ed Isard.

“We have great belief in his tennis and admire how he juggles his school work and tennis training every week.

“We are looking forward to watching, training and supporting him over the summer.”
