PACY striker Jon-Paul Pittman said he never considered going anywhere else once Oxford United had declared an interest in him.

The American-born forward, 24, who made 77 appearances and scored 14 goals for Wycombe, including the equaliser after coming on at substitute in the 2-2 draw at the Kassam Stadium, has agreed to sign a two-year contract in July when his deal runs out at Adams Park.

Brackley-based Pittman, who can play out wide or up front, turned down offers from a number of other teams, to become the U’s fourth summer signing.

“I know the area well, having lived around here, but it’s not about the convenience,” said Pittman, who started his career at Aston Villa.

“If it was 200 miles away I would still be interested.

“I am really excited about it. I think they can get promotion – that’s one of the reasons I came here. The potential is here for everyone to see.

“I have had two promotions in my career and, although I am still learning, I know what it takes (to go up).

“I am looking to bring pace, assists and goals. I never set myself goals targets.”

Born in Oklahoma City, Pitt-man moved to England when his father, who was serving in the US Air Force, was posted to the Oxfordshire area.

After leaving Villa’s youth academy he became a trainee at Nottingham Forest, and after an eight-year association, signed for Doncaster Rovers.

He went on to play for Crawley for whom he made 61 appearances scoring 22 goals before making the move to Wycombe.

Wilder was delighted to sign Pittman.

He said: “Jon-Paul can create and score goals – he’s got really good pace and brings balance to the squad,” he said.

“He is an exciting player and he stretches the game, which is what we have been looking for.

“People can run in behind defenders, but you need someone to create and finish, and he can do that.

“We have been trying to sign some exciting players and we beat off some tough opposition to get him.”
