ADY Williams has stunned Zamaretto Southern League side Didcot Town after last night quitting as their manager.

The former Reading captain and Welsh international cited work commitments as the reason for his resignation – despite pledging his future to the club less than a fortnight ago.

Williams took over from Stuart Peace as manager in February, but was unable to save the Railwaymen from relegation from the Premier Division.

Didcot chairman John Bailey said that the club respected Williams’s decision, but admitted the news came out of the blue.

“In the short time Ady has been involved with Didcot Town we could not fault him, an excellent manager,” he said.

“He was popular with the players, fans and all involved with the club.

“Most importantly, he did things in the right way, both on and of the pitch.

“I have to say we had high hopes for what he could have done for us during the coming season.

“We are very disappointed to lose Ady, it’s come as a big shock, but his family and career have to be his prime commitments, and there is no way this club would do anything to jeopardise that.”

Williams added: “I regret having to relinquish my position at Didcot, but my work commitments have to take priority.

“I would like to thank everyone involved and connected with the football club for all the support they have given me.”

Didcot were relegated on the final day of the season after losing at Oxfordshire rivals Oxford City.

However, it was the loss of six points when Windsor & Eton folded that ultimately sealed their fate.

Didcot revealed that talks have already started with a potential replacement.
