STAR batsman Richard Kaufman admitted to having mixed feelings after breaking Oxfordshire’s one-day scoring record.

Kaufman smashed 170 off 143 balls as Oxfordshire rattled up 311-8 against Bedfordshire in the MCCA Trophy at Banbury on Sunday.

But his joy at setting a new county best was tempered by a poor bowling display that saw Bedfordshire bag a three-wicket victory, having been 115-1 at halfway.

Kaufman, who was also Oxon’s most economic bowler with 1-46, said: “I love playing at Banbury. It was my home club for four years and I always like batting here.

“I always feel like I am playing in front of my home crowd.

“I was just enjoying myself at the end. We got to the stage where Chris Watling and I could take a powerplay and just have some fun.”

Kaufman’s knock surpassed Jamie Hewitt’s 151 for Oxfordshire against Buckinghamshire in 2007.

His innings put him third in the MCCA Trophy’s history, behind Northumberland’s Gary Scott, who hit 186 in 2010 and Bedfordshire’s Alex Wakely (180 in 2009).

Kaufman is head of cricket at The Leys School, Cambridge, which means he is not able to play every week.

He said: “I had not played for two weeks because of school commitments. My last knock was at Challow in the first one-day game.

“I’m lucky at school that I have the bowling machine to use.”

Reflecting on the game, which saw former Middlesex and Sussex seamer Chad Keegan make his debut, Kaufman said: “The dressing room was a very downbeat place afterwards.

“I thought 260 would have been enough to defend on that wicket.

“We looked like we would be OK, but we weren’t quite disciplined enough with our bowling, unfortunately.

“The rate was up to ten an over at one point. If we had played with discipline, we should have beaten them.

“I am just very disappointed after that. It is a strange feeling.

“I think it is the biggest disappointment I have had after losing.

“Bedfordshire looked like batting themselves into a hole.

“It is very rare that a side gets themselves out of that.”

Kaufman added: “We are a young developing side.

“It is good to put to put them under that sort of pressure. They will only learn from it.”
