Banbury United completed their Zamaretto Southern League Premier Division campaign on a low note following a 2-0 defeat at derby rivals Brackley Town on Monday.

It followed Saturday’s loss to champions Truro City.

After a goalless first half in which neither goalkeeper was seriously tested, Banbury showed a little more urgency, though they failed to test Billy Turley in the Brackley goal.

However, it was Brackley who got the all-important opening goal when Elliott Sandy was put through and slotted the ball past Joe Murrell into the corner of the net.

Banbury pushed forward looking for an equaliser, but it left them more open at the back and Owen Story had a glorious chance to increase the home side’s lead on 72 minutes when he lobbed the advancing Murrell, but fired wide.

However, Banbury’s fate was sealed in the last minute when Story scored Brackley’s second as they emerged with the derby honours.

Banbury Utd: Murrell, Farquharson (Stanbridge 75), Maddox, Gordon, Learoyd, Haisley, McDonald, Benjamin (Rose 84), Stone, Green, Staff. Unused subs: Coleman, Ashton.
