Oxford United’s gates this season have been excellent – they are averaging over 7,000, which is the second best in League Two.

So, can the U’s now pull in 10,000-plus crowds for the two big games coming up in April, against Wycombe Wanderers, on April 9, and league leaders Chesterfield, on Easter Saturday, April 23.

“We’ll have to see what the end of the season’s like,” said chairman Kelvin Thomas.

“The one thing about Oxford fans . . . they will come out for the big games. Are five-figure gates a little ambitious for these two games? It depends on the position in the league we’re in.

“It’s interesting,” Thomas added. “I looked the other day at my first game, when I came in as chairman. The crowd that time was 4,645 and the match report actually says ‘a good win watched by a superb crowd’.

“Two years and three months ago, 4,645 was seen as a superb crowd. I think that shows how far we’ve come.

“I believe this is the highest average attendance for Oxford United since 1997 and that includes years in the Championship and First Division.

“The funny thing was, within the club we were probably a tad disappointed with our last gate of 6,715 (against Rotherham). It’s incredible to think we’re a little disappointed in that.”
