Berinsfield's Edward Reilly is through to the semi-finals of the National Schools Championships after a determined points win over Brentwood’s Charlie Lewis at Bexleyheath.

Both boys knew what was at stake at this stage of the competition and that mentality was evident throughout the Class 3 featherweight bout.

Reilly’s more fluent jab edged the opening round, but Lewis attempted to match him punch for punch.

But the Oxfordshire teenager’s defences proved resolute and he was ahead by two points on the computerised scoring mechanism going into the second round.

The last two periods saw intense action, with Lewis trying to claw back the deficit.

But Reilly’s guard was resolute and he was ahead – albeit by a small margin – going into the final two minutes of battle.

That extra crispness in his punches proved decisive as the Berinsfield prospect claimed a well-deserved win.

He now travels to Farnham, Hampshire tomorrow to face Connor White, who boxes for the Gravesham gym in Kent.

Former Berinsfield boxer Jordan Flynn, who switched allegiance to Repton ABC in London, joins Reilly in the semi-finals after landing a right hand that knocked out rival Danny Monk inside a minute.
