Chinnor fly half James Cathcart is set for a spell on the sidelines after having exploratory surgery on his left eye.

Cathcart and fellow back James Serrano both miss tomorrow’s National 3 South West match at home to Weston-super-Mare following their clash of heads against Hartpury last week.

But while Serrano was discharged from Stoke Mandeville Hospital later that day with concussion, Cathcart was kept in over night.

Head coach Jason Bowers said: “James needed surgery on his eye.

“His sight is fine and there is no structural damage. The doctor didn’t know how.

“Fortunately it is just a really bad black eye and cuts.”

Flanker Ed Vickers, lock Ed Devine and scrum half Toby Prescott return, but Bowers admitted he was struggling to field a back line.

“I have never known anything like it as a player or a coach,” said Bowers.

“This year we have just had so many key injuries.

“To be where we are and playing the rugby we are shows what great strength in depth we have.”

Oxford Harlequins visit Old Patesians in search of a league double.

Asked whether they could do it, director of rugby John Brodley said “We would like to think so. We came through a testing weekend and the confidence is high.

“We know how difficult it is to go to Old Pats and come to terms with their slope.”

Quins name of squad of 19, with only lock Lester Smart absent from the group that defeated Witney in the Oxfordshire Cup.

Henley Hawks No 8 Matt Payne misses their National 2 South home clash with Shelford due to a leg injury.

Ant Brennan returns at loose-head prop.

Tom Stradwick moves to No 8 and Adam Holloway to blindside flanker, while Ryan Long starts at openside.

Ali James returns at outside centre, with Neil Baggett dropping to the bench.

Hooker Tom Hill and lock Dorian Jenkins return for Wallingford’s trip to High Wycombe in South West 1 East.

Wallingford lie one place above the drop zone, but victory could put them in mid-table.

Director of rugby Martin Moran said: “Wycombe are on a good run, so this will be a difficult game. We are just looking to get something out of it.”

Henry Lamb, Jez Hicks and Joe Rowles are back in the squad for Witney’s home game with Bletchley.

The trio, who all missed Witney’s defeat to Quins, boost the ranks as they target a first win in eight matches.
