Taunton Tn 3 (Piper 33, Blake 79, Vance 89)

Abingdon Utd 1 (Romeo 14)

Yashwa Romeo’s first goal for Abingdon United wasn’t enough to prevent his side from slipping to defeat at Taunton Town in Division 1 South & West.

Romeo opened the scoring after 14 minutes when he stormed in at the far post to crash Shaun Wimble’s cross into the roof of the net.

Wimble almost doubled Abingdon’s lead a minute later with a free-kick, but Chris Astley got up to turn it away.

But Taunton were level after 33 minutes as Abingdon failed to clear, and Alex Piper firedhome from close range.

United had a lucky escape early in the second half when Ross McNab powered a header against the bar.

Sam Elkins then came to Abingdon’s rescue with a goalline clearance to turn away Darren Rice’s effort.

Substitute John Mills had a shot deflected just past a post for Abingdon.

But Taunton went ahead in the 79th minute with James Blake finishing off a swift counterattack.

Abingdon keeper Jon Beames was then caught out of his goal and Taunton hit a post.

Beames was called into action again to make a good save to deny Blake.

But with a minute left he couldn’t stop Jon Vance firing in a low shot to seal Abingdon’s fate.
