Brothers Peter and George Rourke, from Bicester, are through to the National Schools’ Championship last 16 at Bexleyheath, Kent today.

The pair, who box for Bletchley ABC, both won Home Counties titles.

Peter, 14, recorded a unanimous points verdict over North Herts’ Visual Saroye in the 50kg final at Luton on Monday.

He now comes up against Jordan Flynn, the promising Oxford-based fighter, who recently switched from Berinsfield to the famous Repton Club in London.

A former national schoolboy champion, having won the title as a 12-year-old, Flynn was a beaten finalist last year.

Flynn, who turns 15 next month, was too good for Joey Pearson in the London 50k final, winning with a third-round stoppage after dominating the first two rounds.

Flynn and Rourke have not met before.

George Rourke, 12, a reigning national champion, beat Mark Keynes, from Slough, in the 38-40 kg Home Counties final at Reading. But he only took the title on a majority points verdict from a tough opponent.

Their father, Peter, senior, said: “There’s a bit of boxing history in the final – their cousin Eddie O'Rourke is a fledgling professional – but I’m very proud that they have done so well.”

Two others in the last 16 are Oxford Boxing Academy’s Declan Townsend and Berinsfield’s Edward Reilly.

Townsend claimed the Class 3 Home Counties schoolboys lightweight title with a polished display that saw him comfortably outpoint Stevenage rival Ben Haley.

He took control from the initial exchanges and his extra power and precision proved telling.

Townsend now faces Ellis Delaney of Repton.

Reilly joins him after eliminating Les J Stevens of Pinewood Starr, who had been the favourite to win the Home Counties Class 3 featherweight title.

He had the perfect tactics to claim a unanimous verdict from the judges.

Stevens was never allowed to get into his stride as Reilly threw punches at a phenomenal rate to both head and body.

Reilly now meets Jordan James, from the All Stars gym.

Unlucky not to be joining him is Berinsfield’s Ciaran Flanagan, who delivered a determined performance against reigning National champion Joe Saul-Baylis in the Class 2 36kg category.

He was in contention until the final minute, before his rival edged the final exchanges to get the judges’ nod.
