Abingdon Utd 2 (Harper 22, Melledew 45)

Clevedon Tn 0

Abingdon United scored twice in the first half through Chris Harper and Tom Melledew to secure the points in Division 1 South & West on Saturday.

The hosts took the lead after 22 minutes when Shaun Wimble robbed Clevedon defender, who was trying to usher the ball out of play.

Wimble raced along the goalline before playing the ball into the six-yard box where Harper was able to sidefoot home.

Abingdon were well on top, with Harper’s snapshot striking a post and John Mills heading over from close range.

They made it 2-0 just before half-time when Melledew sent in a curling shot that Mills dummied.

And the ball went straight past unsighted Clevedon keeper Jason Mellor into the net.

In the second half, the visitors came more into the game as Liam Knight and Chris Gale blasted over.

Gale was then denied by a superbly-timed tackle by Sam Elkins.

In the last ten minutes, Harper and Mellewed both saw shots blocked as Abingdon regained the initiative.

Mellor held onto a rising free-kick from Kevin Halliday and saved from JP Mills.
