Most of the rivers across the county were well up after the snow melt and heavy rain last week, and Sunday’s matches were again disrupted, some being moved to either lakes or canals.

With the Thame over its banks at Wheatley, Oxford Waltonian’s Osbourne Cup was transferred to the Glebe.

The nine matchmen found an inch of ice all over the lake and had to smash it first, but the venue fished quite well despite that, with everyone catching.

Tony Gee (Acorn Angling) took top spot with a net of F1 carp, rudd and goldfish on the pole at five metres with pinkie for 18.7.0.

A similar net of fish gave Paul Bowers second place with 12.9.0, all coming on punch, while Barry Edwards was third with 6.12.0 of F1 carp on double maggot.

The third match in this season’s Lechlade Marina Winter League was fished by 16 on a river that was well up.

Usually, these matches are won by bags of large perch, but on this occasion it was dace that came to the nets.

Fred Harrison was the clear winner with 13.8.0 of them, plus a few perch, on the pole at ten metres against a boat, feeding chopped worm and using worm on the hook.

Fishing the main flow with red maggot, Phil Fagan weighed in 10.3.0 of dace for second place, followed by Paul Woodley. He used a whip with red maggot and caught small dace and perch for 6.8.0.

North Oxford transferred their Wally Harper Cup match from the Cherwell to the Oxford Canal at Wolvercote, and the seven anglers found it hard work.

Mick Abbott put together a winning weight of 3.6.0 of skimmers on pole with punch.

Second place went to Terry Whittington with 1.13.0 of perch on the chop, while Maurice Winstone used pinkie to tempt 0.13.0 of skimmers and roach for third.

Littlemore and Yarnton fished a joint match on the canal at Walton Well Road, contested by 11 anglers.

Fishing bloodworm over joker, Jason Jones caught small roach, gudgeon and skimmers to triumph with 3.2.0.

Nick Collier and Paul Willoughby tied for second with 2.12.0 of bits, both anglers fishing bloodworm.

Eleven anglers fished the Kidlington match on the canal at New Bridge, and again, the ice had to be broken.

The eventual winner was Steve Heath with 2.7.0 of roach on pole and punch.

Dave Scott-Picton had 1.12.8 of roach on punch for second, followed by Michael Watson, who caught six little fish on red maggot over groundbait for a third-placed 1.3.0.

Points after 16 matches: J Bean 119, H Clarke 81, D Foreshew & P Jackman 69.

Tackley were on the canal at the Three Pigeons where the seven members had to smash the cat ice before starting.

Anthony Alder won with a few small roach, chublets and dace on either pinkie or worm for 1.10.0.

Stephen Malone also switched caught dace and perch for a second-placed 0.13.0, and third, two ounces behind, was Garry Cooke.
