City of Oxford swimmer Helena Beel won a gold medal in her first competitive gala – in Abingdon Vale’s level 3 meet at Temple Cowley.

The debutant, a pupil at Windmill School, Headington, won the 50m breaststroke event for nine and ten year olds, clocking 50.55 seconds.

Beel, who also finished fourth in the 50m freestyle on-ly started after a joint open evening between the club and Thame and Oxford Schools Partnership four months ago.

Beel was competing with more than 200 swimmers across the region Wantage White Horses youngster Jake Kay was awarded the trophy for the top boy swimmer in the 9 & 10 age category, in which he claimed one gold and two silver medals.

Abingdon won 12 golds, with doubles from Michael Fabes, Elliott Rennie, Luke Teh and Alice Fletcher-Etherington.

Didcot Barramundi’s Oliver Beard won best boy (11 & over) for his golds in 100m butterfly and 100m breaststroke.
