WOODSTOCK Harrier Steve Naylor moved to within one victory of clinching the Oxford Mail Cross Country League title after another dominant showing in the third round at Horspath on Sunday.

The race, which also incorporated the 2011 Oxfordshire Cross Country Championship, saw Naylor cruise to victory by 49 seconds ahead of Radley Rhys Glastonbury.

With four of the five races to count towards the title, Naylor, who has now triumphed in all three rounds this season, needs only to repeat the feat at Cirencester Park next month to clinch the crown.

Once again, Naylor, nicknamed “Speedy Steve”, romp-ed clear early on, over an undulating two-lap course.

He was never challenged for victory, despite a strong showing from Glastonbury.

Abingdon’s Oz Ellis was third home in 31.51, with White Horse Harrier Tim Traynor clocking 31.57 for fourth.

The men’s Division 1 team prize was won by Newbury A, who amassed 177 points, while Oxford City A were second on 292 points.

In men’s Division 2, Naylor’s triumph helped Woodstock to a convincing victory.

All seven of their points-scoring athletes finished in the top 100, with James Bolton securing a top-ten finish in seventh place.

In the women’s race, Newbury’s Sophie Crumly led the way, clocking 22.44 over a shorter distance.

Frances Briscoe, returning to compete in the county championship, was second for White Horse Harriers in 23.17, while Oxford City’s Melissa Hawtin finished third in 23.36.

Hawtin’s win, coupled with tenth place from Martha Lloyd and 11th from Sue Davies (V35), led City to team victory in ladies’ Division 1.

They are lying fourth in the team standings.

At junior level, Oxford City once again led the way with a string of victories.

Storm Sunderland clocked 12.07 over a 3km course to land the under 13 girls’ victory.

She finished 13 seconds ahead of Swindon’s Charlotte George, with Radley’s Megan Humphreys third in 12.26.

Sunderland, Elisha Evans (sixth in 12.42) and Beth Mulvany (eighth in 13.09) led City to the team victory.

Nat Jones made it three wins out of three in the under 13 boys’ competition.

He saw off Witney Roadrunner Henry Macke by 17 seconds, clocking 11.31.

In the combined under 15/17 girls’ race, City fielded 11 runners, with their A team emerging victorious.

Beth Hawtin was second in 16.15, crossing the line ten seconds behind winner Lillie Bellmay (Swindon Harriers).

With Lauren Hawtin third in 16.20 and Jade Walker fifth in 16.49, City easily beat Swindon by 16 points.

And City showed their strength in depth as their B team finished in third place.

Imogen Kempton was seventh in 17.12, with Ellis Burns (11th in 18.23) and Amy Brooker (12th in 18.24) completing the team.

In the under 15/17 boys’ competition, City’s success continued as Matthieu Marshall led them home in fourth place, winning the under 15 category.

With Ben Upjohn crossing the line in sixth and Josh Tack 11th, it secured team victory.

In the youngest age gruop, Radley’s Gabriella McErlain won the under 11 girls’ race in 7.28, with teammate Shelbie Jackson second in 7.34.

Freddie Sunderland (Oxford City) was second in the under 11 boys’ event.
