Ben Watson, from Didcot’s St Birinus Club, broke three national records on the way to a gold medal in the British Under 23 Championships in Birmingham.

The 19 year-old snatched 140 kilos and clean & jerked 160kg to capture the 94kg class title.

Watson, who will be competing the European Junior Championships in Cyprus, later this month, also won the award for the best overall lifts in the championship.

Clubmate Robert Green came second in the under 18 69kg class with lifts of 90kg and 118kg.

St Birinus’s third medal came from Eddie Chambers, who was third in the under 23 69kg class with lifts of 88kg and 106kg.

Other competitors from the club were Josh Cox, 16, won was fifth in nthe under 18 69kg category, and Alex Johnson, 14, who came ninth in the same class.

Eddie Chambers, the British junior champion, will receive his bursary of £2,000 from the Jaguar Academy of Sport during the inaugural awards evening in the Long Room at Lord’s Cricket Ground tomorrow.

The extra cash goes towards his aim to compete in the Olympic Games.

Chambers is a sixth-form student at Abingdon and Witney College.
