CHRIS Marsh , who swam with a titanium plate in his collar bone after injury, led a succesful campaign for City of Oxford in the British Gas ASA masters and senior age group championships at Sheffield.

Oxford punched well above their weight with five individual national titles, six silver medals and seven bronzes.

Marsh, 27, set the ball rolling with a win in the 1500m freestyle in a time of 18mins 40.13secs.

Chris Aust, 28, won the 50m breaststroke gold medal in a British record time of 29.04. The previous record has stood since 1998.

Dave Denny, 34, added to his haul of national titles with another two gold medals – victories in 800m freestyle (8.58.64) and 100m backstroke 1.03.41.

Denny was touched out by 0.01sec in the 400m freestyle in 4.18.17. He also secured a silver medal in the 200m breaststroke (2.43.40).

Marie Royal, 45, won gold in 200m freestyle (2.19.67).

Further silver medals were achieved by David Hall, 65, in the 800m freestyle, and Roman Walczak, 56, in the 100m backstroke.

Bronze medal successes came from Ian Surrage, 24 and Peter Williams, 30 – aboth in the 50m breaststroke –Hall in the 100m and 200m butterfly, and 200m breaststroke swimmers Matt Gomez, 44, and Simon Joyce, 32.

The quartet of Denny, Royal, Maggie Smith and Gomez gained silver medals in two mixed freestyle relays.

The men’s 4x 100 medley relay team of Williams, Surrage, Denny and Aust completed Oxford’s tally with a bro-nze.
