Tony Gee, pegged by the bridge at Wheatley in the Oxford Waltonian Teams of Three match on the Thame went into the river to retrieve a section of pole and found himself up to his waist in silt.

He had to be pulled out by two other anglers.

This should stand as a warning to all. It’s not worth putting yourself at risk as it’s all too easy to end up in difficulties.

Alan Gee (Acorn Angling) won the match. The successful method was pole with caster, which accounted for ten chub, the best going 6.1.0, in a winning weight of 36.9.0.

Jason Smith was runner-up with 8.3.0, which included a perch of 3.7.0, plus bits, on chopped worm.

In third place with 6.8.0 was Martin Gough, who fished pole and maggot to tempt three chub and some roach.

Team result: Army Three 8pts, Barbel Boys 9, Acorn Angling 10.
