OXFORD United chairman Kelvin Thomas says he has confidence in manager Chris Wilder to give the team “a tweak here and there” to get them back up and running.

Some fans have been casting gloom at the U’s recent slide, which has seen them lose four out of the last five matches, but Thomas believes the club has been changed dramatically over the past two years, and the staff will continue to drive it forward.

He admitted, though, that the standard of football in League Two has been higher than perhaps expected.

“The standard has probably surprised me a little,” he said.

“People talked about the Conference and League Two being similar, but I would probably disagree now.

“I think League Two is a better standard overall and what we are facing each week, is what we faced from maybe the top four or five teams in the Conference last season.”

Thomas went on to say that everyone behind the scenes will work that extra bit harder following the disappointing recent results.

Asked whether there was room to bring in new faces, he replied: “You are always looking to improve things.

“I think Chris has the conundrum of the younger player or experienced player.

“We looked great earlier in the season, but maybe it is time for a little bit more experience in the squad.

“We do have a very young squad which is very exciting for the football club. I don’t think we’ve had that for a while here.

“They might need a bit of calming down in certain situations, but Chris recognises that and we will do what we can.

“Maybe it needs a tweak here and there, but I know that Chris has that all in hand. There may be somes ins and outs over the next week or so.

“We trust Chris to bring the players in to give us a bit of a kick.”
