Shaw Gibbs Oxfordshire Foursomes League

Chipping Norton clung on to be crowned Section 1 champions by just half a point after a dramatic final day of league action.

Three teams all had a chance of the title before the start of play, but Chippy sealed the spoils, despite losing 2-1 at Tadmarton Heath.

Had Tadmarton managed another half point, they would have successfully defended their crown, while Frilford Heath blew their hopes with a 3-0 defeat at The Oxfordshire – their second successive loss.

Tadmarton’s Guy Sambrook and Owen King pipped Mark Stanton and Matt Johnson by one hole and teammates Chris Lowe and Ian Manning defeated Chippy’s Ian Manning and Chris Heslip by the same score.

But Chippy’s crucial point came when Andy Johnson and Shaun Kench defeated Liam Robinson and Spencer Hallam 2&1 in match three.

Frilford’s 3-0 whitewash saw them slip from second place to fourth, while Magnolia Park and Ellesborough were relegated.

Burford sealed the Section 2 title with a 2-1 victory over Buckingham.

Studley Wood will join them in Section 1 next season after seeing off North Oxford 3-0.

Matches one and three saw comfortable Studley wins, but it took Nathan Marsh’s 25-foot putt on the 18th green to win match two.

Carswell maintained their unbeaten record to take the Section 3 crown, defeating Brailes 2-1 in their final match.

Bicester were promoted as Section 3 runners-up, with Hadden Hill winning Section 4 ahead of Witney Lakes, who are also promoted
