Wallingford produced a stunning recovery from 27-0 down, only to be pipped 27-24 by High Wycombe in South West 1 East.

With the Wycombe forwards dominant the loose, Wallingford’s discipline slipped and the visitors took full advantage, scoring a penalty and four tries, two of them converted.

Wallingford finally got on the scoreboard with a Phil Kelly try converted by Ralph Smith to go in 27-7 down at the break.

From the restart, Wallingford looked more determined to compete with the physical Wycombe forwards and the comeback was on.

Tries from Dan Stalker and Ian Jeffreys, the latter’s converted from the touchline by Smith, brought them to within eight points and in the closing stages, Henry Venners went over in the corner to earn two bonus points.

Witney slipped to their second defeat of the season, going down 20-10 at Bletchley.

They weren’t helped when, ten minutes into the second half and having used the last of their replacements, flanker Carl Campbell was injured.

Even so, a pumped-up Bletchley outfit deserved the spoils on the day.

Theye opened up a 10-0 lead with a converted try and drop goal before Ed Mitcham replied with a penalty before the break.

Mitcham, Joe Rowles and Tim Muller all put in great runs after the break as Witney dominated.

But a string of injuries undermined their efforts, and although Campbell stayed on, he was a shadow of his normal self.

Bletchley slotted another drop goal, and a breakaway try under the posts, which was converted, put them out of sight.

Witney had the last word with a Pierre Dubost try, converted by Henry Lamb.
