Rayvin Giovanni, joint favourite for next year’s Derby, has been retired after suffering a crashing fall in a supporting open on the St Leger final card at Wimbledon on Tuesday.

The 4-9 odds-on favourite had no answer to the early pace of winner Coolvannyrock (20-1), and then met trouble at the quarter mark before making ground in the latter stages where he was involved in crowding and was sent flying.

Rayvin Giovanni was carried off with the crowd silenced. It was later revealed his suffered two fractures in a front leg and won’t race again.

It was a mixed night for trainer Sean Cahill who saw his 6-1 on shot Droopys Oscar beaten, Jimmy Lollie oblige at 1-2 favourite to soften the blow before disaster struck with Giovanni later.

The star of the night was Paul Donovan’s Droopys Bradley, who smashed the track record for the second time in the William Hill St Leger, having beaten the old clock in the qualifiers. He didn’t just break it again, he slaughtered it by 41 spots.
