Banbury Utd 0

Oxford City 2 (Lyon 40, McIlwain 78)

Oxford City picked up their first win in 19 matches after winning their derby clash at Banbury in the Premier Division on Saturday.

City were good value for their win, although Banbury must have been left rueing missed opportunities, which leaves them still seeking their first home win of the season.

Former Banbury player Wayne Blossom came to City’s rescue early on when Nabil Sharif lobbed City keeper Terry Burton, who had come off his line.

With the ball heading goalward, Blossom got back well to clear off the line.

Declan Benjamin then wasted a golden chance to put Banbury ahead as he headed wide from David Staff’s cross when well-placed.

City’s Liam Malone set up Mark Pritchard, who saw his effort put behind by the legs of keeper Joe Murrell.

Blossom’s shot from Mark Janes’s corner then sailed over the bar.

But City were not to be denied the lead, which they got five minutes before half-time.

Pritchard’s cross was mis-kicked by Delroy Gordon, giving Michael Lyon the easiest of chances to slot home just inside a post.

City held sway after the break as the home side found it difficult to get forward.

Craig McIlwain directed a header from James Clarke’s cross straight into Murrell’s hands, while Staff saw a shot in the side netting at the other end.

Chances were few and far between, and City secured the points 12 minutes from time.

Janes’s corner from the right was met powerfully by the head of McIlwain to give City their first win of the season and left Banbury still seeking their first home success.
