OXFORD City’s veterans bagged a triple medal haul in the Southern Area Road Relays at Aldershot.

Leading the way, City’s vet 60 team won gold, while their vet 40s and 50s scooped silvers in the four-stage races.

The vet 60s were never out of the top three, and Allan Matthews overtook Brighton & Hove’s Peter Crowhurst on the final leg to seal first place.

Roy Treadwell got City off to a strong start, clocking 23mins 11secs for his two laps of the 3km course.

Dave Parsons ran 23mins 11secs for leg two before Gareth Jones (24.42) and Matthews (24.15) completed the race.

City’s 40s side of John Ateyo (20.20), Steve Male (19.23), Steve Overton (20.34) and Julian Richardson (20.02) finished 36 seconds behind winners Thames Hare & Hounds, but more than three minutes ahead of Kent AC in third.

Male clocked the second fast vet 40 split.

In the vet 50 event, City finished 52 seconds behind South London Harriers after a consistent showing.

Pete Gray (22.14), Phil Huxley (22.13), Richard Grant (22.13) and Heine Van Zyl (21.44) ensured City claimed second by more than a minute.

Elsewhere, there was also success for Abingdon Amb-lers’ senior men, who qualified for the National 6-Stage Road Relays after coming 25th.

Les Newell completed the opening 3.75-mile leg in 20.09 followed by Phil Egerton (20.15), Daniel Hamilton (19.58), Simon Fisher (20.22) and David Walters (20.55).

In a dramatic final-leg, Oz Ellis (20.10) gained the four places necessary to guarantee Abingdon a place in the nationals at Birmingham next month, with an overall time of 2hrs 1min 9 secs.

In the women’s 4-Stage Relays, Amblers came 38th out of 47 teams thanks to Katy Adams (17.02), Sarah Matthews (17.17), Liz Purbrick (15.42) and Steph Page (16.03).
