Wantage Tn 4, London Colney 2

RICHARD Claydon scored a hat-trick as Wantage booked their place in the second qualifying round on Saturday.

The home side dominated the early exchanges, but had to wait until midway through the half when Graham Edney squared the ball to Claydon, who finished sharply.

The Wantage striker doubled his side’s lead six minutes before the break.

Colney winger Frankie Jowle tripped Gavin Jones in the box, and Claydon slotted home the resulting spot-kick.

Five minutes after the break, Colney reduced the arrears as David Parkinson turned two Wantage defenders before striking past keeper Gareth Tucker.

But Claydon completed his hat-trick just after the hour to make it 3-1 as his left-foot volley from just outside the box gave Colney keeper John Armand no chance.

Greg Shaw reduced the arrears again for the visitors, but Danny Keen secured victory in the last minute as he made no mistake from close range.

The replay is at Court Place Farm on Wednesday (7.45pm).
